As noted on the Getting Started page, Short Forms are often relatively easy to learn in terms of simple basics: hand/foot placement and body movements. That means that by examining the video on this site of the first ten short forms and the four primary kata, it is possible to begin a very basic solo training by learning individual short forms and slowly connecting them through the joining forms contained in the kata. Understanding more complex functions that transform movements with the stick into a profound expression of underlying universal determinative structure requires a teacher who can examine your work and provide qualified feedback and direction for future solo practice.
If you have spent time learning the first ten short forms and at least one of the Daiki Taiyu and would like intruction for continued study, we have made this possible by enabling practitioners to submit video to Read Sensei for his personal review and commentary. (PLEASE NOTE - this is not designed for the first time you pick up the stick; there is sufficient information on this site to provide a solid foundation for beginning practice, especially for those with training histories in martial arts.)
If you would like to submit a video to Read Sensei for his review and teachings, please follow the guidelines below, fill out the form, and submit your work.
VIDEO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
1. Videos are limited to two minutes. This is sufficient for a number of short forms and at least one of the primary kata, and will give Read Sensei a clear idea of your abilities and needs;
2. Please provide any information regarding martial arts training;
3. We limit submissions to ten videos per month. Once that limit is reached we will remove the submission form until the first of the next month;
4. The price for each video submission is $100;
5. Video quality is less important than frame - it is critical to see your entire body, including the knees and feet;
6. Read Sensei will review your training and in return provide a short video of his own, demonstrating critical and important points for your training;
